How much fibre should you eat per day?

That 14g shortfall adds up. It represents the same gap every day, across every year. And the science on what fibre actually does in the body is compelling enough that it's worth paying attention to.
What fibre actually does?
Gut bacteria convert fibre into short-chain fatty acids — compounds that reduce systemic inflammation, support the integrity of the gut lining, modulate immune function and play a role in metabolic regulation.² A 2019 meta-analysis commissioned by the World Health Organisation, published in The Lancet, found significant associations between higher fibre intake and reduced risk of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. The authors note that most of the underlying research relates to fibre from whole foods rather than supplements."³
Those are category-level effects from fibre in general. But there’s a more nuanced layer of science that’s become increasingly relevant in longevity and healthy ageing research.
Why fibre diversity matters as much as quantity?
Different types of fibre have different structures. Different structures are fermented by different species of gut bacteria. And a gut microbiome that has more bacterial diversity (more species, more functional range) is associated with better health outcomes.
Research published in Nature Metabolism, studying over 9,000 individuals, found that gut microbiome composition is associated with healthy ageing — with a more unique microbiome profile linked to better health outcomes in older adults.
The microbiome: fibre feeds the bacteria, diverse fibre feeds diverse bacteria, diverse bacteria produce a broader range of beneficial compounds.
The implication for what you actually eat is straightforward: the variety of your fibre intake matters, not just the total amount. Most people eat the same rotation of foods week to week, which means their gut bacteria are eating the same rotation too.
Why men specifically are falling short in their fibre intake?
The average man in the UK is eating around 21g of fibre per day — 70% of the 30g target.¹ This isn’t because men eat badly. It’s largely because the foods that dominate high-protein, performance-focused diets — meat, fish, eggs, dairy, protein shakes — contain no fibre at all. A well-constructed training diet can be genuinely low in fibre even when it’s otherwise excellent.
